Databases A-Z: Remote Access

About Remote Access

What is Remote Access?

Many library electronic resources - including databases, journals, and e-books - are accessible from off-campus with an Indiana University Kokomo Network ID. In order to access these electronic resources, you must:

  1. Have an Indiana University Kokomo network username and passphrase. Only authorized Indiana University students, staff, faculty, and staff may apply for and receive network access. To apply for access, please follow instructions outlined on the IT Account Management web page.
  2. Have an Internet Service Provider (ISP) connection from your off-campus location

There are three ways by which you can remotely access the library's electronic resources from off-campus:

  1. While using the Indiana University Kokomo Library website, if you click on a link which requires network ID access, the Indiana University Kokomo Library EZproxy server login page will appear and prompt you to provide your username and passphrase, prior to opening the link.
  2. Log in directly to the EZproxy server using your Indiana University Kokomo Network username and passphrase, and select the database you would like to use from the Databases A-Z list.
  3. [FACULTY ONLY] Set up a VPN, Virtual Private Network, on your computer:
    • In a browser, go to:
    • Enter your Network ID credentials.
The first time you log in at this URL, the server will download and install a Java applet (Network Connect) to your workstation. If you are prompted to accept a certificate from Juniper, do so.
    • The browser window will remain open after you are connected; you may close it if you wish. You don't need to click Start next to "Network Connect" in the browser window. You should be able to see a Network Connect window with information about your VPN connection.
    • To log out, click Sign Out in the Network Connect window or in the browser window, if you have left it open.

The Proxy Link Generator (available here) provides an avenue by which faculty and/or instructors may create links for off-campus access to library resources. These links may then be placed within course sites in learning management systems, such as Canvas.

Tips for Troubleshooting Remote Access Problems

What if I have problems accessing library resources from off campus?

  • Make sure you are using the links on the Indiana University Kokomo Library Web pages and not bookmarked links.
  • AOL users should use a browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.
  • The EZproxy Server requires a cookie be set on your computer. Make sure that your security level and/or firewall allows the cookie to be set.
  • Clear cookies, temporary Internet files, and history on your browser. Log out and restart your computer.
  • If you have a cable or DSL line and leave your computer on and connected all the time, shut down your system, and restart.
  • In some cases you may receive an error message:
    • If the error relates to your username and passphrase, go to the IT Account Management Passphrase Change Web page and make sure your passphrase is the same for all systems. If this does not correct the problem, contact the IU Kokomo Help Desk at 765-455-9315 or Please report the content of the error message to IT.
    • If the error relates to the EZproxy Server and states that a link or Web address is not authorized, please contact a Librarian at 765-455-9521 or Please be sure to tell the librarian the contents of the error message.
    • For other error messages, please note the message, and contact the Help Desk at 765-455-9315 or

TIP: If you need to report an error message to the library or IT, please be as specific as possible in your message. Helpful details include the name of the Internet browser you were using, what you were trying to do when you encountered the error message, and the complete text of the error message. Even better, send a screenshot of the error message!

Questions about Network accounts or problems with remote access should be directed to the IU Kokomo Information Technology Help Desk at 765-455-9315 or

Proxy Link Generator

Creating Links for Off-Campus Access to Library Resources

Question: How do I set up links to articles or other resources, such as items from the library databases, for Canvas web pages or other locations so that they work from off campus?

Answer: You need to format the links in a way that redirects them through the EZproxy server. If you do not do this, the links will work on campus but not off campus.

Use this Link Generator to create your 'proxied' links:

  • The link must be a "persistent" link. This means that the link is not generated with a session identifier. When in doubt, try it, but test it a day later, too, to make sure it still works.
  • You do not need to do this for freely available sites (such as Google) or links that already begin with
  • If you have addresses such as, this will fix them for you.
  • The links generated will work from both on and off campus.
  • In order to work, this tool requires that JavaScript be enabled within your browser.

1. Copy and paste your source URL here:

2. Click the "Create Link" button below:

3. Copy and use the resulting link.

4. Clear the form to make another link.

Problems or comments? Please contact us.

NOTE: Only sites which have been registered in the EZproxy server will work through this generator. If you are working with an outside web resource that needs to be registered with EZproxy, contact Angie Thorpe, Digital User Experience Librarian. Please provide the URL to which you are trying to link within your message.
